He studied film and television at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 2003. Carter began his career as a cinematographer, working on short films and music videos. He made his feature film debut as a cinematographer on the Australian drama The Square (2008). He then worked as a cinematographer on the Australian drama The Rover (2014), the Australian war drama The Water Diviner (2014), and the Australian comedy-drama The Dressmaker (2015). In 2016, Carter made his directorial debut with the Australian drama The Daughter. The film was nominated for five AACTA Awards, including Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay. Carter has also directed episodes of the Australian television series The Kettering Incident (2016) and Glitch (2017). As of 2021, A. J.
