Abdul Ganiyu Agbaje was a Nigerian politician and statesman who served as the first Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966. He was born in Niger State, Nigeria, on 23 November 1925. Agbaje was educated at the Government College, Ibadan, and the University College, Ibadan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1951. He then went on to study at the London School of Economics, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Economics in 1954. Agbaje began his political career in 1954 when he was elected to the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Nigeria. He served as Minister of Finance from 1957 to 1959, and then as Prime Minister from 1960 to 1966. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Nigerian National Oil Corporation and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Agbaje was also a member of the Nigerian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 1961 and 1962. After leaving office, he served as a member of the Nigerian Senate from 1979 to 1983. Agbaje died on 28 April 2021 at the age of 98.
