He then went into private practice, specializing in criminal law. In 1975, he was appointed to the New York Supreme Court by Governor Hugh Carey. He served on the court until his retirement in 1995. Halpern was known for his fairness and impartiality on the bench. He was also known for his commitment to the law and his dedication to justice. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the accused and was a vocal opponent of the death penalty. Halpern was married to his wife, Ruth, for over 50 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. He passed away on April 15, 2021, at the age of 98. At the time of his death, Halpern had an estimated net worth of $2 million.
