Acker Bilk was born in Pensford, Somerset, England, on 28 January 1929. He was the son of a coal miner and a housewife. He began playing the clarinet at the age of nine, and by the age of fifteen he was playing professionally in local bands. In 1951, he joined the Royal Marines Band Service, and during his time in the service he developed his own style of playing. After leaving the service in 1955, he joined the Ken Colyer Jazz Band, and then formed his own band, the Paramount Jazz Band. In 1958, he released his first single, "Summer Set", which became a hit in the UK. He followed this up with a string of hits, including "Stranger on the Shore", "Aria", and "Acker Bilk's Party". He also released several albums, including "Acker Bilk's Clarinet", "Acker Bilk's Party", and "Acker Bilk's Best". Acker Bilk has been awarded several honors, including an MBE in 1975, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 2006.
