In October 2016, he appeared as Mozart in the National Theatre production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus and reprised the role when the production returned from February to April 2018. Gillen appeared in Benidorm from 2011 to 2015 as Liam Conroy, son of the transvestite barman/maid, Les or Lesley. He first appeared in Series 4 and departed at the end of Series 7.
