Afua Cooper is a Jamaican-born Canadian historian, author, poet, and educator. She was born on 8 November 1957 in Jamaica and moved to Canada in the late 1970s. She is currently a professor of history at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Cooper is a prolific author, having written several books on African-Canadian history, including The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal (2006), The Book of Negroes (2007), and The Hanging of Angélique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Montréal (2008). She has also written several books of poetry, including The Hill (2009) and The House of My Ancestors (2010).
Cooper has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, including the Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction in 2006, the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize in 2008, and the Order of Canada in 2009. She was also inducted into the Order of Nova Scotia in 2011.

In 2016 Cooper led the creation of a minor program in black and African diaspora studies at Dalhousie. In 2018 she was proclaimed Poet Laureate for the city of Halifax.
In 2011 Cooper was named to the James Robinson Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies at Dalhousie University. She also has expertise in women's history and New France studies, and She is a winner of the Harry Jerome Award for professional excellence.

She studied history at the University of Toronto, where she earned a PhD in African-Canadian history with specialties in slavery and abolition. Her dissertation, "Doing Battle in Freedom's Cause", is a biographical study of Henry Bibb, a 19th-century African-American abolitionist who lived and worked in Ontario.
