Åke Söderlund is a Swedish racewalker who was born on 11 April, 1925 in Stockholm, Sweden. He is best known for his gold medal in the 50 km walk at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He also won a bronze medal in the 20 km walk at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Söderlund began his career as a racewalker in the 1940s and competed in his first international event in 1948. He won his first major international medal in 1950, when he won a silver medal in the 50 km walk at the European Championships in Brussels, Belgium. He went on to win gold medals in the 50 km walk at the 1951 European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, and the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. Söderlund retired from competitive racewalking in 1957 and went on to become a coach and mentor to many of Sweden's top racewalkers. He was inducted into the Swedish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
