Akira Yoshimura was born in 1927 in the city of Osaka, Japan. He is a renowned Japanese novelist and short story writer. He is best known for his novel, “The Sea and Poison”, which won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1958. Yoshimura graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1950 with a degree in literature. He then went on to work as a journalist for the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. In 1958, he published his first novel, “The Sea and Poison”, which won the Akutagawa Prize. Yoshimura has written numerous novels and short stories, including “The River Ki”, “The Sound of Waves”, “The Setting Sun”, “The Shadow of a Tree”, “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle”, and “The Housekeeper and the Professor”. He has also written several non-fiction works, including “The Japanese Way of Life” and “The Japanese Way of Thinking”. Yoshimura has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Culture in 1983, the Yomiuri Prize in 1984, and the Order of the Rising Sun in 1989.
