Akkineni Nageswara Rao was an Indian film actor, producer, and director, known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He was one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema. He was popularly known as "ANR". He was the recipient of three National Film Awards, nine state Nandi Awards, and five Filmfare Awards South. He was also honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, for his contribution to Indian cinema. Akkineni Nageswara Rao started his career as a stage actor in the 1940s. He made his film debut in 1947 with the Telugu film, Mana Desam. He went on to act in over 255 films in a career spanning over six decades. He was known for his roles in films such as Devadasu (1953), Mayabazar (1957), and Gundamma Katha (1962). He also produced and directed several films, including the critically acclaimed Bhakta Prahlada (1967). Akkineni Nageswara Rao was married to Annapurna Akkineni and had four children, including actor Nagarjuna Akkineni. He died on 22 January 2014, at the age of 91.
