Al Bell is an American music executive, songwriter, producer, and composer. He is best known for his work with Stax Records, where he served as president and co-owner from 1968 to 1975. During his tenure at Stax, Bell was responsible for signing and producing some of the label's most successful acts, including Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, and The Bar-Kays. He also wrote and produced several hit songs, including "Theme from Shaft" and "Respect Yourself". Bell was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up in the city's segregated African-American community. He began his career in the music industry as a disc jockey in the 1950s, and eventually moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked as a talent scout for Stax Records. In 1968, he was appointed president of the label, and helped to expand its reach and influence. In 1975, Bell left Stax and founded Bell Records, which he ran until 1982. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a music consultant and producer. In the 1990s, he returned to Memphis and founded the Al Bell Foundation, which provides educational and cultural opportunities for underserved youth. Bell has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. He has also received numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a National Medal of Arts. As of 2021, Al Bell's net worth is estimated to be roughly $10 million.
