Alan Ayckbourn is an English playwright and director. He is one of the most prolific and commercially successful playwrights of the modern era, having written more than 70 plays since his first in 1959. He has won numerous awards, including seven Laurence Olivier Awards, three Evening Standard Awards, and three Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards. He has also been nominated for two Tony Awards. Ayckbourn was born in London, England, on 12 April 1939. He was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He began his career as an actor, appearing in repertory theatre in Scarborough, before becoming a director at the Library Theatre in Scarborough in 1959. Ayckbourn has written more than 70 plays, many of which have been performed in the West End and on Broadway. His plays are known for their wit, dark humour, and exploration of relationships between characters. He has also written several novels, and directed films and television programmes. Ayckbourn has been married twice, first to Christine Roland in 1960, and then to Heather Stoney in 1974. He has two children from his first marriage, and two stepchildren from his second. He currently lives in Scarborough, England.
