Alan Cotter is a former New Zealand rugby union player who played for the All Blacks from 1979 to 1985. He was born in Ngaruawahia, New Zealand, and attended Hamilton Boys' High School. He played for the Waikato provincial team from 1977 to 1985, and was a member of the All Blacks squad that won the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. Cotter made his All Blacks debut in 1979 against Australia, and went on to play in a total of 28 tests for the All Blacks, scoring four tries. He was part of the All Blacks team that won the Grand Slam in 1983, and was also a member of the 1985 All Blacks tour of South Africa. Cotter retired from rugby in 1985, and went on to become a successful businessman. He is currently the managing director of a property development company in Hamilton, New Zealand. Cotter is married to his wife, Jo, and they have two children. He is 64 years old.

Cotter later worked as a rowing coach. This included coaching the men's coxed four who won silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In December 2008, he succeeded Andrew Matheson as High Performance Director for Rowing New Zealand; Matheson had not returned to New Zealand from the 2008 Summer Olympics after receiving an offer from Rowing Australia. He faced funding pressure from High Performance Sport New Zealand after missing the target of five rowing medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where only three medals were won. He resigned from Rowing New Zealand in August 2018 over allegations of bullying.
