Alan J. Pakula was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He was best known for his work in the 1970s, including the political thriller All the President's Men (1976), the legal drama Klute (1971), and the conspiracy thriller The Parallax View (1974). He was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning the Best Adapted Screenplay for To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Pakula was born in The Bronx, New York City, to Jewish parents. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied English and philosophy. After graduating, he worked as a production assistant on the Broadway production of The Rose Tattoo. Pakula began his career in the film industry as a producer, working on films such as The Sterile Cuckoo (1969) and Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing (1973). He then moved into directing, with his first feature film being Klute (1971). The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Pakula his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Pakula went on to direct several more films, including The Parallax View (1974), All the President's Men (1976), and Sophie's Choice (1982). He was nominated for two more Academy Awards for Best Director, for All the President's Men and Sophie's Choice. Pakula died in a car accident in 1998. He was posthumously awarded the Directors Guild of America's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.

In 1998, he was slowly in the works to direct a situation comedy he had written entitled "A Tale of Two Strippers"; which told the story of two male exotic dancers in Las Vegas who find themselves trying to evade a hit man after witnessing an arranged murder when they get an address mixed up and arrive to the wrong location to perform a private gig. He died in an automobile accident before anything could start so the project was immediately canceled. Had it gone through it would've marked the film debuts of actors Josh Duhamel and Ashton Kutcher whom he hired to star in the lead roles.
