Alan Poul is an American film and television producer and director. He is best known for his work on the HBO series Six Feet Under, for which he won two Emmy Awards. He has also directed and produced the films The Five Senses, Personal Velocity, and The New World. Poul was born on May 1, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in English literature. Poul began his career in the entertainment industry in the late 1970s, working as a production assistant on the television series The White Shadow. He then went on to work as a production assistant on the films The China Syndrome and The Rose. In the 1980s, Poul worked as a production manager on the television series Fame and as a production supervisor on the films The Big Chill and The Natural. He then went on to produce the television series The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and the films The Five Senses and Personal Velocity. In 2001, Poul created and executive produced the HBO series Six Feet Under, for which he won two Emmy Awards. He also directed several episodes of the series. In 2005, Poul directed the film The New World, starring Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher. He then went on to direct the films The Back-up Plan and The Good Lie. Poul is currently working on the television series The Romanoffs, which is set to premiere on Amazon in 2018.
