Alben Barkley was an American politician who served as the 35th Vice President of the United States from 1949 to 1953. He was a Democrat from Kentucky who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1912 and served as the Majority Leader from 1937 to 1947. He was the oldest person ever to serve as Vice President, at the age of 71. Barkley was born in Lowes, Kentucky, on November 24, 1877. He attended Marvin College and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1900. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, where he graduated in 1903. Barkley began his political career in 1912 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1927, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He served in the Senate until 1949, when he was elected Vice President. As Vice President, Barkley was a strong advocate for civil rights and was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. He also supported the creation of the United Nations and the Marshall Plan. Barkley died on April 30, 1956, at the age of 78. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
