Aldrich Ames is an American former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer and analyst who was convicted of espionage in 1994. He is currently serving a life sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana. Ames was born in River Falls, Wisconsin, and grew up in McLean, Virginia. He graduated from high school in 1959 and attended the University of Chicago, where he studied Russian language and literature. He joined the CIA in 1962 and worked in the Directorate of Operations, where he was responsible for Soviet counterintelligence operations. In 1985, Ames was assigned to the CIA's Rome station, where he was responsible for Soviet and East European operations. In 1989, he was transferred to the CIA's Counterintelligence Center in Langley, Virginia. In 1994, Ames was arrested and charged with espionage. He pleaded guilty to nine counts of espionage and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Ames is believed to have caused the deaths of at least 10 CIA agents and the compromise of numerous intelligence operations. He is also believed to have received more than $2.5 million from the Soviet Union and Russia for his espionage activities.
