Alexander Kwapong was born in Gold Coast, now Ghana, in 1927. He attended Achimota School and then the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1952. He then went on to pursue a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States. Kwapong began his career as an agricultural economist in the Ministry of Agriculture in Ghana. He then went on to become the first Ghanaian to be appointed as the Director of the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board in 1965. He held this position until 1971 when he was appointed as the first Ghanaian Secretary to the President of Ghana. Kwapong has held numerous positions in the public and private sectors, including Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board, and Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Commercial Bank, the Ghana Stock Exchange, and the Ghana National Insurance Corporation. Kwapong has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the Volta, the highest honor in Ghana, and the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest honor in Ghana. He was also awarded the Grand Medal of the Republic of Ghana in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation.
