Alexander Sokolov is a Russian politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2012. He was born on October 10, 1955 in Moscow, Russia. Sokolov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1978 and began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979. He served in various diplomatic posts in the Soviet Union and Russia, including as Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2004. In 2004, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Vladimir Putin. During his tenure, he was a key figure in the negotiations over the 2008 Russo-Georgian War and the 2010 New START Treaty. He also served as the President of the United Nations Security Council in 2009. In 2012, he was replaced as Minister of Foreign Affairs by Sergei Lavrov.
