Alexander Stepanov is a Russian computer scientist and software engineer. He is best known for his work on the C++ Standard Template Library (STL) and the development of the programming language Ada. He is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Stepanov was born in Moscow, Russia, and graduated from Moscow State University in 1981 with a degree in mathematics. He then worked at the Institute of Control Sciences in Moscow, where he developed the programming language Ada. In 1986, he moved to the United States and joined the research staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). At PARC, Stepanov worked on the C++ Standard Template Library (STL), which is a collection of generic programming algorithms. He also worked on the development of the programming language Eiffel. In 1994, he joined the faculty of the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is currently a professor. Stepanov has received numerous awards for his work, including the ACM Software System Award in 1998, the IEEE Computer Society's Computer Pioneer Award in 2000, and the ACM Programming Languages Achievement Award in 2004. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
