Alexandre Astruc is a French film director, screenwriter, and film critic. He is best known for his influential essay "The Birth of a New Avant-Garde: The Camera-Stylo" (1948), which argued for a new form of cinema based on the synthesis of writing and image. He is also known for his films, including the award-winning The Red Balloon (1956) and The Blood of a Poet (1960). Astruc was born in Paris in 1923. He studied at the Sorbonne and the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques. He began his career as a film critic, writing for the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma. In 1948, he wrote his influential essay "The Birth of a New Avant-Garde: The Camera-Stylo", which argued for a new form of cinema based on the synthesis of writing and image. Astruc began directing films in the 1950s. His first feature film, The Red Balloon (1956), won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. His other films include The Blood of a Poet (1960), The Little Soldier (1963), and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). Astruc has also written several books, including The Technique of Film Editing (1953) and The Technique of Film Directing (1956). He has also written several plays and television scripts. Astruc has been awarded numerous honors, including the Legion of Honor, the Order of Arts and Letters, and the Prix Louis Delluc. He is a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
