Alexis Arguello was a Nicaraguan professional boxer and politician. He was a three-time world champion in three different weight classes, and is widely considered one of the greatest boxers of all time. Arguello began his professional boxing career in 1968, and won his first world title in 1974, when he defeated Ruben Olivares to become the WBA featherweight champion. He went on to win the WBC super featherweight title in 1977, and the WBC lightweight title in 1981. Arguello retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 82 wins, 8 losses, and 65 knockouts. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998. In addition to his boxing career, Arguello was also active in Nicaraguan politics. He served as mayor of Managua from 2000 to 2008, and was a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front. Arguello died on 1 July, 2009, at the age of 57.
