Alfred Andersch was a German writer and publisher. He is best known for his novel, Der schwarze Obelisk (The Black Obelisk), which was published in 1956 and was a bestseller in Germany. He was also the founder of the publishing house Suhrkamp Verlag. Alfred Andersch was born on 4 February 1914 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. He studied philosophy, German literature, and art history at the University of Munich. After graduating in 1937, he worked as a journalist for the Munich-based newspaper, the Münchner Neueste Nachrichten. In 1940, Andersch joined the German army and served in World War II. After the war, he returned to Munich and worked as a freelance writer. In 1949, he founded the publishing house Suhrkamp Verlag, which became one of the most important German publishing houses. In 1956, Andersch published his most famous novel, Der schwarze Obelisk (The Black Obelisk). The novel was a bestseller in Germany and was translated into several languages. Alfred Andersch died on 21 February 1980 in Zurich, Switzerland. He was 66 years old.
