He was the founder and CEO of Whittle Communications, a media company that pioneered the concept of "channel one" television programming for schools. He was also the founder of the Whittle School of Medicine at the University of Tennessee. Whittle was born in Mount Vernon, New York, on February 23, 1924. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a degree in business administration. After college, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, Whittle began his career in the advertising industry. He worked for several advertising agencies before founding his own company, Whittle Communications, in 1979. The company was the first to offer "channel one" television programming for schools. The company also produced educational films and magazines. Whittle was also the founder of the Whittle School of Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He was a generous philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various charities and causes. Whittle was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He had three children and four grandchildren. He passed away on April 8, 2013, at the age of 89.
