Alojzije Stepinac was a Croatian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Zagreb from 1937 to 1960. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998 and canonized in 2016. Stepinac was born in Brezaric, Krasic, Croatia, Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Croatia) on 8 May 1898. He was the son of a Croatian peasant family. He studied at the seminary in Zagreb and was ordained a priest in 1924. Stepinac was appointed Archbishop of Zagreb in 1937 and was made a cardinal in 1953. He was a vocal opponent of the communist regime in Yugoslavia and was arrested in 1946 and charged with treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in prison. He was released in 1951 and placed under house arrest. Stepinac died in 1960 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. Stepinac is remembered for his courage and dedication to the Catholic Church in the face of persecution. He is also remembered for his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation between Catholics and Orthodox Christians in Yugoslavia.
