Alton Ellis was a Jamaican singer and songwriter who is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of rocksteady music. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and began his career in the late 1950s, recording for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's legendary Studio One label. He is best known for his 1967 hit "I'm Still in Love With You," which was later covered by Sean Paul. He also had a number of other hits, including "Girl I've Got a Date," "Rock Steady," and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do." He was also a successful producer, working with artists such as The Heptones, The Ethiopians, and The Gladiators. He died in 2008 at the age of 70.
