Alvin Curran is an American composer, sound artist, and performer. He is best known for his pioneering work in the field of electroacoustic music and his use of found sounds and improvisation. He has composed works for a variety of ensembles, including chamber, orchestral, and solo instruments, as well as for radio, film, and television. He has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including John Cage, Luciano Berio, and Morton Feldman. Curran was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He has taught at the University of California, San Diego, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has held residencies at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University and the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music in Paris. Curran has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Koussevitzky Foundation commission, and a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Huddersfield in England and the University of Victoria in Canada.
