On January 16, 2020, Simard joined the Ontario Liberal Party.
A Radio-Canada article published in June 2019 notes that since leaving the PC Party, she has been present for only 7 voting sessions in the Legislature, out of a possible 60. However, this was due to an injury following an accident in Vancouver where she was treated at a Vancouver hospital and required treatment for the injury for months to follow.
First elected as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, she served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Francophone Affairs. After Premier Doug Ford eliminated the province's French-language services commissioner and cancelled plans for a new French language university, she left the party on November 29, 2018, to sit as an independent.

Simard grew up in Embrun, Ontario, mostly raised by a single mother (the only child of separated parents). She held down two jobs in high school and paid her own way through law school, graduating from the University of Ottawa in 2013. She funded her tuition by working full-time, through scholarships and by living in a house near campus with 14 roommates. While working as an advisor and an assistant in the Senate over the course of seven years, she took classes at night and in the summer. Shortly after graduation, she was elected as a municipal councillor in the Township of Russell.
