Faber was born in New York City on January 12, 1928. She attended Hunter College and received her bachelor's degree in psychology in 1949. She went on to earn a master's degree in education from Columbia University in 1951. Faber began her career as a teacher in the New York City public school system. She then went on to become a professor of education at the City University of New York. In the 1970s, she began to focus her work on parenting and child development. In 1980, Faber co-authored How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk with Elaine Mazlish. The book has become a classic in the field of parenting and has been translated into over 30 languages. Faber has also written several other books, including Siblings Without Rivalry, Liberated Parents, Liberated Children, and How to Talk So Teens Will Listen & Listen So Teens Will Talk.
