Alan Thaw was an Australian professional footballer who played for the South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was born on 17 January 1926 in Australia. Thaw played in the VFL from 1945 to 1956, playing a total of 166 games and kicking a total of 97 goals. He was a member of South Melbourne's 1945 premiership team and was a member of the club's leadership group from 1951 to 1956. Thaw was a versatile player, playing in the forward line, backline and midfield. He was known for his strong marking and accurate kicking. Thaw was awarded life membership of the South Melbourne Football Club in 1956. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. Thaw passed away on 28 August 2020 at the age of 94.

1949

Recruited locally, Thaw was a back pocket in Essendon's 1949 premiership side. He retired in 1954 and the following season was put in charge of the Reserves team, coaching them until 1959. In the 1959 VFL season he coached Essendon to a win over Fitzroy when Dick Reynolds was unavailable. From 1960 to 1976, Thaw was coach of Essendon's Under-19s and steered them to premierships in 1961 and 1966.
