Alan Tonelson is an American economist and political commentator. He is the founder and president of the American Economic Alert, a research and advocacy organization. He is also a senior fellow at the U.S. Business and Industry Council, a research and advocacy organization for small and medium-sized businesses. Tonelson was born in New York City and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1975 with a degree in economics. He then went on to earn a master's degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1977. Tonelson has written extensively on economic and trade issues, including books such as The Race to the Bottom: Globalization and the Changing U.S. Standard of Living (Westview Press, 2000) and The Race to the Top: How Globalization and the U.S. Economy are Reshaping the World (Westview Press, 2002). He has also written for publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times. Tonelson is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, including CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and NPR. He has also been a guest lecturer at universities such as Harvard, Princeton, and the University of Michigan.
