Alastair Hanton is a British civil servant who served as the Permanent Secretary of the Department of the Environment from 1983 to 1989. He was born on 10 October 1926 in London, England. Hanton was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read economics. He joined the Civil Service in 1949, and held a number of posts in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Department of the Environment and the Department of Trade and Industry. In 1983, Hanton was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Department of the Environment, a post he held until 1989. He was also a member of the Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1983 to 1989. Hanton is currently 95 years old. He is married and has two children. His height is not known.

In 1985, Hanton initiated the LINK ATM network that allowed customers to withdraw money from ATMs of banks other than their own.

After graduating, a 22-year-old Hanton joined the newly-founded government overseas aid organisation, the Colonial Development Corporation in 1948, and after two years at head office in London was posted to Malawi to plan public works.
