Albert Vorspan was born in New York City on February 12, 1924. He is an American rabbi, author, and social justice activist. He is best known for his work in the Reform Jewish movement, particularly in the areas of civil rights, social justice, and interfaith relations. Vorspan attended the City College of New York and was ordained as a rabbi in 1948. He served as the rabbi of Temple Beth El in Rochester, New York, from 1948 to 1954. He then served as the rabbi of Temple Israel of Hollywood from 1954 to 1989. Vorspan has written numerous books, including Jewish Dimensions of Social Justice (1972), Jewish Dimensions of Social Responsibility (1975), and Jewish Dimensions of Human Dignity (1980). He has also written extensively on the Holocaust, civil rights, and interfaith relations. Vorspan has been active in the Reform Jewish movement for many years. He served as the senior vice president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism) from 1989 to 1993. He was also the chair of the National Interreligious Task Force on Soviet Jewry from 1979 to 1989. Vorspan is a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Conference of Christians and Jews' Humanitarian Award (1984), the American Jewish Committee's Humanitarian Award (1985), and the American Jewish Congress' Humanitarian Award (1986).
