Timeline
In August 2018, he participated in the 7th round of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), after being invited by the touring car series based in Germany as a guest driver for their only Italian event of the season, which took place at the Misano circuit in his native region of Emilia-Romagna. He drove a hand-controlled BMW M4, finishing 13th in the first race and 5th in the second race.
After the CART crash in which he lost his legs, he also spent several years competing as a handcyclist, winning numerous medals in the World Championships and at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games.
He made his return to competitive motor racing in 2004. He went on to race a BMW in the World Touring Car Championship between 2005 and 2009, winning a total of four races in the series.
He is an actor, known for Camera Café (2003), Formula 1 (1950) and Adrenalin: The BMW Touring Car Story (2014).
He returned to the CART series with Mo Nunn Racing for the 2001 season, but struggled to regain his previous form. With 14 out of 20 races completed, his best result was finishing in 4th place once. During the 15th race of the season, at the Lausitzring in Germany, Zanardi was in the lead with 13 laps to go when he made a pit stop for fuel. He spun out as he exited the pit lane and his car was T-boned by Alex Tagliani's car at over 200 mph. The impact was so violent that Zanardi's car was split in half and both of his legs were amputated above the knee.
He had little success racing a Williams car during the 1999 Formula One season, retiring from 11 out of 16 races and scoring no championship points. His best finish was 7th place at the Italian Grand Prix, with only the top 6 finishers scoring championship points. His three-year contract with the Williams team was terminated upon the end of the 1999 Formula One season, effectively marking the end of his Formula One career.
Between 1996 and 1998, he drove for Chip Ganassi Racing in the CART series, winning a total of 15 races and claiming two consecutive drivers championship titles in 1997 and 1998. His success in the CART series allowed him to sign a three-year contract with the Williams team and return to Formula One in 1999.
He made his Formula One debut with the Jordan team at the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix, participating in the final three races of the 1991 Formula One season. Midway through the 1992 Formula One season, he participated in three Grand Prix weekends with the Minardi team. During the 1993 and 1994 Formula One seasons, he participated in a total of 22 Grand Prix weekends with the Lotus team, scoring his only championship point by finishing in 6th place at the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix.
