Alexander Politkovsky was a Russian journalist and political commentator who was known for his criticism of the Russian government and its policies. He was born in Moscow on 15 September 1953 and graduated from Moscow State University in 1975. Politkovsky began his career as a journalist in the late 1970s, working for the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. He later worked for the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where he wrote extensively about the Chechen conflict and the human rights abuses that occurred during the war. He was also a professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Politkovsky was an outspoken critic of the Russian government and its policies, and was frequently targeted by the authorities for his views. In 2004, he was arrested and charged with libel, but was later released. In 2006, he was poisoned on a flight to Beslan, but survived. He was later shot and killed in 2006 in Moscow. Politkovsky was awarded numerous awards for his work, including the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists in 2002, and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2006.
