Alexander Schneider was a renowned violinist, conductor, and teacher. He was born in Vilna, Russian Empire (now Vilnius, Lithuania) on October 21, 1908. He studied at the Vilna Conservatory and the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. In the 1930s, Schneider moved to Paris, where he became a member of the Quatuor Pro Arte, a string quartet. He also performed with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire and the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française. In the 1940s, Schneider moved to the United States, where he became a professor at the Juilliard School of Music. He also conducted the Juilliard String Quartet and the New York Philharmonic. In the 1950s, Schneider founded the Schneider Quartet, which performed in Europe and the United States. He also conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. In the 1960s, Schneider was appointed music director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont. He also conducted the Cleveland Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In the 1970s, Schneider was appointed music director of the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. He also conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Alexander Schneider died on January 17, 1993 in New York City. He was 84 years old.
