Álvaro Magaña was a Salvadoran politician and lawyer who served as the President of El Salvador from 1982 to 1984. He was a member of the National Conciliation Party (PCN). Magaña was born in Ahuachapán, El Salvador, on 8 October 1925. He studied law at the University of El Salvador and graduated in 1950. He then worked as a lawyer and was a professor at the university. Magaña was a member of the PCN and was elected to the National Assembly in 1972. He was appointed Minister of Education in 1977 and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1979. In 1982, he was elected President of El Salvador. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic reforms and sought to improve relations with the United States. He also sought to improve relations with other Central American countries. Magaña left office in 1984 and returned to his law practice. He died on 15 April 2011 at the age of 85.
