Andrew Billingsley is an American academic and professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is best known for his work on African-American families and communities. Billingsley was born on March 20, 1926 in Marion, Alabama. He attended the Tuskegee Institute, where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1948. He then went on to earn a master's degree in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1950. In 1954, Billingsley joined the faculty of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he taught for more than 40 years. During his tenure, he served as chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and was a founding member of the African-American Studies Program. Billingsley has authored or co-authored several books, including Black Families in White America (1968), Climbing Jacob's Ladder (1992), and Family Life in Black America (1995). He has also served as editor of the Journal of Black Studies and the Journal of Family Issues. Billingsley is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Council on Family Relations' Distinguished Career Award and the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award.
