Andy Chande was born to a Gujarati family in Mombasa, Kenya. He was the eldest of four children. He attended the University of Nairobi and graduated with a degree in economics. He began his career as a civil servant in the Kenyan government, working in the Ministry of Finance. He later moved to the private sector, working as a financial consultant for various companies. In the late 1960s, Chande moved to the United Kingdom and began working in the banking industry. He eventually became the managing director of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). Chande was a successful businessman and philanthropist. He was a major donor to the University of Nairobi and established the Chande Foundation, which provides scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Chande was married to his wife, Jaya, for over 50 years. They had two children, a son and a daughter. Chande passed away on 28 April, 2017 at the age of 89.
