Ann Taves is an American religious historian and professor of religious studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She was born in 1952 in New York City. Taves received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974 and her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1981. She has held teaching positions at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1981. Taves is the author of several books, including Revelatory Events: Three Case Studies of the Emergence of New Spiritual Paths (Princeton University Press, 2009), Religious Experience Reconsidered: A Building Block Approach to the Study of Religion and Other Special Things (Princeton University Press, 2009), and Fits, Trances, and Visions: Experiencing Religion and Explaining Experience from Wesley to James (Princeton University Press, 1999). Taves has received numerous awards and honors, including the American Academy of Religion's Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Analytical-Descriptive Category in 2000, the American Academy of Religion's Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Historical Category in 2009, and the American Academy of Religion's Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Constructive-Reflective Category in 2011. Taves is married to the historian of science, Robert J. Taves. They have two children.

Ann Taves (born 1952) is Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a former President of the American Academy of Religion (2010). From July 2005–December 2017, she held the Cordana Chair in Catholic Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Taves is especially known for her work Religious Experience Reconsidered (2009), stressing the importance of the findings and theoretical foundations of cognitive science for modern religionists.

Taves was born in 1952. She received her bachelor's degree in religion from Pomona College in June 1974. She went on to receive her master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago Divinity School in June 1979 and December 1983, respectively.
