Antônio Delfim Netto is a Brazilian economist and politician who served as the Minister of Finance from 1967 to 1974 and as the Minister of Planning from 1979 to 1985. He is considered one of the most influential economists in Brazil and is credited with helping to shape the country's economic policies. Netto was born in São Paulo on 1 May 1928. He studied economics at the University of São Paulo and received his doctorate in economics from the University of Paris in 1954. Netto began his career as an economist in the Brazilian government in the 1950s. He served as the Minister of Finance from 1967 to 1974 and as the Minister of Planning from 1979 to 1985. During his tenure, he implemented a number of economic reforms, including the introduction of a floating exchange rate and the privatization of state-owned companies. Netto has also served as a professor at the University of São Paulo and the Getulio Vargas Foundation. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He has written several books on economics and has received numerous awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Rio Branco and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit.
