April Saul is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer. She was born on May 27, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her work in the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she has been a staff photographer since 1985. Saul has won numerous awards for her work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 2003 for her series of photographs of Camden, New Jersey. She has also won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the National Headliner Award, and the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism Award. Saul has also been a visiting professor at the University of Missouri, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Texas at Austin. Saul is currently 69 years old. In January 2006, Saul "vowed to document in words and photos the death of every child by gun in the eight-county Philadelphia region in 2006." The resulting column in the Philadelphia Inquirer was called "Kids, Guns and a Deadly Toll."

1981

Saul has photographed and written for The Philadelphia Inquirer since 1981. In 1997, Saul, along with Inquirer reporter Michael Vitez and photographer Ron Cortes, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Journalism for a series of articles on end-of-life care, telling the stories of terminally-ill patients who wished to die with dignity.

1980

Saul became a photographer at The Baltimore Sun in 1980, and the following year, joined the staff of the Philadelphia Inquirer. She was the first recipient of the Nikon/ NPPA Documentary Sabbatical Grant for her work on Hmong refugees in 1985.
