Archie Stout was an American cinematographer and camera department specialist who worked in the film industry from the early 1920s until his death in 1965. He was born in Renwick, Iowa, on March 30, 1886. Stout began his career as a cinematographer in the early 1920s, working on films such as The Ten Commandments (1923), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), and The Big Parade (1925). He also worked on several silent films, including The Iron Horse (1924), The Big Parade (1925), and The Wind (1928). Stout was a pioneer in the use of special effects in films, and was responsible for the development of the traveling matte process, which allowed for the integration of live action and animation. He also developed the process of rear projection, which allowed for the integration of live action and background footage. Stout was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Ten Commandments (1923). He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his work on The Thief of Bagdad (1924). At the time of his death in 1965, Stout had worked on over 200 films. He was posthumously inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

American cinematographer, formerly a forest ranger. In Hollywood from 1914, he had a reputation as an adept outdoor cameraman, employed particularly on second feature westerns, often for Republic or such Poverty Row outfits as Paul Malvern's Lone Star. Having laboured under shoestring budgets for most of his career, Stout finally hit the big time as director of photography on John Wayne's A-grade feature The High and the Mighty (1954). The pressure might have been too much for him as he suffered a heart attack the following year and was forced to retire.
