Armstrong Gibbs was an English composer and conductor. He was born in Great Baddow, Essex, and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He was a prolific composer, writing over 200 works, including operas, ballets, symphonies, chamber music, and songs. He was also a conductor, and served as the musical director of the Royal Philharmonic Society from 1932 to 1939. He was knighted in 1935 for his services to music. He died in 1960.

Gibbs' son, David Michael Hamilton Gibbs, was born in 1919 in West Sussex, and was a Captain in the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines unit of the Essex Regiment; David was killed in action while fighting in the Sangro River of Italy on November 18, 1943 at the age of 24, and was buried at Sangro River War Cemetery. In memory of his son, Gibbs composed his third symphony: "The Westmorland".
