Ary Barroso was a Brazilian composer, pianist, and singer-songwriter. He is best known for his song "Aquarela do Brasil", which has been covered by many artists, including Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. He was also a prolific composer of sambas, choros, and other Brazilian music styles. Barroso was born in Ubá, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 7 November 1903. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon performing in local clubs. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s and began writing songs for the radio. He wrote his first hit, "Aquarela do Brasil", in 1939. The song was an instant success and has since become a national anthem of sorts in Brazil. Barroso went on to write many other popular songs, including "Na Baixa do Sapateiro", "Brasil Pandeiro", and "Caboclo das Minas". He also wrote the music for the musical "O Homem do Sputnik", which was a hit in Brazil in the 1950s. Barroso was awarded the National Order of Merit in 1962 and the National Order of Cultural Merit in 1965. He died in Rio de Janeiro on 18 February 1964.
