Astra Taylor is a Canadian-American documentary filmmaker, writer, and activist. She is best known for her documentaries What Is Democracy? (2018) and Examined Life (2008). She is also the author of the books The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age (2014) and Democracy May Not Exist, But We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone (2019). Taylor was born on 30 September 1979 in Winnipeg, Canada. She attended McGill University in Montreal, where she studied philosophy and political science. She then moved to New York City, where she worked as a freelance writer and editor. Taylor's documentary Examined Life (2008) was an exploration of the ideas of eight prominent philosophers, including Judith Butler, Cornel West, and Peter Singer. The film was an official selection at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Documentary. In 2014, Taylor published her first book, The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age. The book examines the impact of the internet on culture and politics, and argues for a more equitable distribution of power and resources in the digital age. In 2018, Taylor released her second documentary, What Is Democracy?, which explores the history and current state of democracy around the world. The film was an official selection at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. Taylor's most recent book, Democracy May Not Exist, But We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone, was published in 2019.
