Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician, diplomat, and author who is the leader of the National League for Democracy and the first and incumbent State Counsellor of Myanmar. She is the first woman to serve in the position. She is also the first non-military leader of Myanmar since the military coup of 1962. Aung San Suu Kyi was born on 19 June 1945 in Rangoon, Burma. She is the daughter of Aung San, a Burmese independence activist, and Khin Kyi, a diplomat. She was educated in India and the United Kingdom, and earned a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from St Hugh's College, Oxford. Aung San Suu Kyi has been an active political figure in Myanmar since 1988, when she founded the National League for Democracy. She was placed under house arrest for 15 of the 21 years from 1989 to 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. She was released from house arrest in November 2010 and, following the 2012 by-elections, she became a Member of Parliament and the Leader of the Opposition. In 2015, she became the first non-military leader of Myanmar since 1962. Aung San Suu Kyi is 76 years old and has a net worth of $3 million.
