Bankim Chandra Ray was born into a middle-class family in Kanthalberia, 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He was educated at the University of Calcutta and obtained a degree in law. He started his political career in the Indian National Congress in the 1950s and was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1957. He served as a minister in the West Bengal government from 1967 to 1971. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1971 to 1977 and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977. He served as a minister in the Union Cabinet from 1977 to 1979. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986 and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989. He served as a minister in the Union Cabinet from 1989 to 1991. He was the founder of the All India Forward Bloc, a political party in West Bengal. He was the president of the party from 1967 to 1991. He was also the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee from 1972 to 1977. Bankim Chandra Ray is 97 years old as of 2021.
