Bantu Holomisa is a South African politician who has served in various capacities in the government since the early 1990s. He is the founder and leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM). Holomisa was born in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape, on 25 July 1955. He attended the University of Fort Hare, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences. He then joined the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1977, where he rose to the rank of Major-General. In 1989, Holomisa was appointed as the Transkei's Minister of Environment and Tourism. He was later appointed as the Transkei's Minister of Home Affairs and then as the Transkei's Minister of Defence. In 1993, Holomisa was expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) for publicly criticising the government's handling of the Shell House massacre. He then founded the United Democratic Movement (UDM) in 1997. Holomisa has served as a Member of Parliament since 1999 and was re-elected in the 2019 general election. He is currently the UDM's National Chairperson and the party's leader in the National Assembly. Holomisa is married to Noluthando and they have two children. He is 65 years old.

In 1994 Holomisa was elected to the African National Congress National Executive Committee, and was the Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism of South Africa. After testifying before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission he was expelled from the ANC on 30 September 1996.

1987

Holomisa forced the resignation and exile of Prime Minister of Transkei George Matanzima in October 1987 and overthrew Matanzima's successor, Prime Minister Stella Sigcau in December 1987. Holomisa then became the Transkei's head of government from 1987 to 1994, when Transkei was reintegrated into South Africa.

Holomisa was born in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape. He joined the Transkei Defence Force in 1976 and had become a Brigadier by 1985.
