Lawson attended the Queensland University of Technology, where he studied acting. He began his career in the theatre, appearing in productions such as The Importance of Being Earnest and The Crucible. In 2006, Lawson made his television debut in the Australian drama series All Saints. He went on to appear in a number of other Australian television series, including Packed to the Rafters, Home and Away, and Love Child. In 2015, Lawson was cast in the American comedy series No Activity, which aired on CBS All Access. He has also appeared in the films The Little Death and The Dressmaker.
