Tollefson was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1964 and served until 1972. He was a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the House Education Committee. He was also a member of the North Dakota Republican Party Central Committee. Tollefson was a successful businessman and owned several businesses in Minot, including a car dealership and a real estate company.
